Anise Seed

aniseNative only to Egypt and the Mediterranean region, small gray-green anise seeds come from a plant belonging to the parsley family. It is now cultivated in almost every region of the world.
They have a licorice flavor (anise is used to make licorice), but one that also imparts a feeling of warmth when the seeds are eaten.Anise seed utilized to flavor breads, candies, and alcoholic drinks, anise seeds also can be inserted to cabbage or braised beef. Anise seed is a widespread ingredient in Indian vegetable and fish curries.

Anise set offs the flavor of cinnamon and nutmeg in baked goods. Anise leaves can be used to compose herbal tea or added to salads. A simple tea made of the crushed seeds works well to not only aid in digestion but stop the flatulence that sometimes is associated.

For the most part however, this herb is used as a flavoring in culinary dishes as well as in liqueurs.
It is pleasant way to end any meal.

It is also used as an expectorant and mild antimicrobial which is why today in many of the over the counter products, one of the main ingredients is anise.
Anise has a long reputation of being a digestive aid. Hippocrates recommended it for coughs.
It is the essential oil of the seed that has proven to react on the secretory cells of the respiratory tract. The flavor of anise is licorice which gives the medicinal benefits an added bonus.

It should be noted that although not proven scientifically, those with high blood pressure should avoid anise. In some people it has been shown to increase the blood pressure.

Anise is a great herb for aromatic therapy. It was widely cultivated for its fragrance and was used in soaps, oils, and mouth fresheners.

Anise seeds antispasmodic properties make them helpful in countering menstrual pain. Their expectorant action justifies their use for certain respiratory ailments.

Anise seeds may be beneficial in treating impotence and frigidity. Anise essential oil is used for similar complaints, and is also used externally for lice and scabies.
