Kudzu is a climbing, coiling, and trailing vine native to southern Japan and southeast China. Its name comes from the Japanese name for the plant, Kuzu.
Kudzu also contains a number of useful isoflavones, including daidzein (an anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial agent).
Daidzin is a cancer preventive and is structurally related to genistein (an antileukemic agent). Kudzu is a unique source of the isoflavone puerarin. Kudzu root compounds can affect neurotransmitters (including serotonin, GABA, and glutamate.)

Description

Medicinal Parts

The medicinal part is the rhizome collected in spring or autumn.

Flower and Fruit

Five to 7 flowered spikelets in groups of 20 form a 10 cm-long ear. The ears are usually short, upright and usually dense green and inconspicuous grass with 5 veined, lanceolate, sharply keeled glume. The spike stem is glabrous. The glume is 8 to 11 mm long, acuminate or awned. The anthers are 5 to 6 mm. The fruit is 6 to 7 mm long, flat to the front with 1 groove.

Leaves, Stem and Root

Triticum is a 0.2 to 1.5 m perennial plant with a hardy creeping rhizome. The rhizome has long white runners, is segmented and hollow. The leaves are thin, flat, grass-green or gray-green. The upper surface is rough and frequently covered in solitary, long hairs.

Characteristics

The spikelets have their broad side turned toward the wave-like curved main axis. The plant is odorless; the taste sweetish.

Habitat

Indigenous to the temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere. Introduced to Greenland, South America, Australia and New Zealand.

Production

Triticum rhizome consists of the rhizome, roots and short stems of Agropyron repens, harvested in spring before the blade develops, as well as its arrangements. The rhizomes are collected after the fields are harrowed. They are cleaned, washed and dried at approximately 35° C.

Not to be Confused With

The rhizomes of Cynodon dactylon, Poaceae and Carex species (a frequent event).

Description

Medicinal Parts

The medicinal parts are the whole or cut dried herb and the fresh aerial parts. The yellow pulp from the berry is edible. Several other related species as well have edible fruits or healing properties.

Flower and Fruit

The axillary pedicle grows up to 8 cm and bears 1 flower. The flowers are androgynous and rayed with a diameter of 5 to 9 cm and have an involucre. The 5 sepals are green on the outside, white on the inside and tough. The 5 petals are white to pale red. There is a secondary corolla inside the petals made up of 4 thread wreaths arranged in rays around the axis of the flower, which are white on the inside and purple on the outside. The odiffer has 3 carpels and 3 style branches, which end in a thickened stigma. The 5 stamens are joined at the base and fused to the androgynophor.

Leaves, Stem and Root

The Passion Flower is a perennial vine on a strong, woody stem reaching up to about 10 m in length. The vine is firstly angular, later, gray and rounded with longitudinally striated bark. The leaves are alternate, petiolate, serrate and very finely pubescent. The under surface is hairier than the upper surface. There are bumpy additional-floral nectaries on the leaf blades. Stipules and tendrils grow from the leaf axils.

Habitat

The plant is indigenous to an area from the soumeast U.S. to Argentina and Brazil. It is cultivated in Europe as a garden plant.

Production

Passion Flower herb consists of the fresh or dried aerial parts of Passiflora incarnata. The flowering shoots are cut 10 to 15 cm on top of the ground, usually after the formation of the first apple-sized fruit. The harvest is dried in a hay drier or in die air. For a maximum flavonoid content in the flowering shoot, twice ytimely harvest is advisable; opinions are not, however, unanimous.

Effects

Passion Rower contains glycosides and in animal tests is hypotensive and stimulates respiration. Sedative or spasmolytic effects could not be definitively proven. The use of the herb for nervous agitation, complexy falling asleep or nervous gastrointestinal symptoms needs further investigation. A motility-inhibiting effect has been observed in animal tests.

Medicinal Parts

The medicinal part is the whole fresh plant collected during the flowering season.

Flower and Fruit

The flowers are solitary and almost always nodding. They have 6 campanulate, close, bright-violet tepals. These are usually thickly silky-haired on the outside with revolute tips, and are 1.5 to 3 cm long. The stamens are yellow and numerous; the longer ones are at least two-thirds the length of the tepals. The carpels with the style are as long as the tepals. The ripe fruit is oblong and densely pubescent. The protruding style is up to 6 cm long.

Leaves, Stem and Root

The plant is a perennial, 7 to 50 cm high with a strong, dark, usually divided, rhizome. The basal leaves usually appear after the flowers and are not hardy. They are 3 to 4 pinnate with narrow linear acuminate end sections that, along with the petioles, are thickly white villous. The stems are erect and densely pubescent with 3 whorled high leaves, divided into linear, pubescent tips.

Characteristics

The plant is poisonous.

Habitat

The plant caused in southwestern Europe and now as well grows in central and eastern Europe.

Production

Pasque Flower herb consists of the dried, on top of-ground parts of Pulsatilla vulgaris and/or Pulsatilla pratensis.

Protoanemonine-forming agents: In the freshly harvested plant, presumably the glycoside ranunculin changes enzy-matically when the plant is cut into small pieces, and probably as well when it is dried, into the pungent, volatile protoanemonine that quickly dimerizes to anemonin. When dried, the plant is not capable of protoanemonine-formation.

Triterpene saponins

Effects

In animal experiments, the protoanemonin and anemonin had an antipyretic and motility-inhibiting effect. In the inhibition test, an antibiotic effect was shown. Protoanemonin is a strong local irritant to the mucous membranes and skin.

Indications and Usage

Unproven Uses

Pasque Flower is used for ailment and functional disorders of genital organs; inflammatory and infectious ailment of skin and mucosa; ailment and functional disorders of the gastrointestinal tract and the urinary tract; neuralgia; migraine; and general restlessness. It has as well been used to treat iritis, scleritis, gray cataract and glaucoma.

Homeopathic Uses

Homeopathic uses include inflammation of the respiratory tract, digestive organs, female genital organs, bladder, eyes, middle ear, menstruation complaints, predicaments during pregnancy and nursing, rheumatism, predicaments with voiding urine, headdiscomforts, insomnia, measles, mumps and depressive conditions.

Contraindications

The treatment is contraindicated during pregnancy.

Precautions and Adverse Reactions

General

Medicinal Parts

The medicinal part of the tree is the fruit.

Flower and Fruit

The flowers are arranged in 5 to 7 cm long, axillary spikes. The flowers are small and fused. Their structures are arranged in fives. The sepals are almost glabrous and yellowish-white; the calyx tube is 5-tipped. There are no petals, but there are 10 stamens and a single-chambered, inferior odiffer. The style is long and projects out of the bud. The fruit is a glabrous, ovoid drupe, yellow to orange-brown when ripe and 2 to 4 cm long.

Leaves, Stem and Root

Tropical Almond is a tree that grows up to 25 m high. The leaves are alternate or opposite, 7 to 18 cm long, 4 to 6 cm wide and coriaceous. The petiole is approximately 2.5 cm long, with 2 glands at the upper end. The lamina is ovate or elliptical, blunt and orbicular at the base. It is finely crenate and woolly pubescent beneath. The branches are rust colored, woolly or glabrous, and the trunk has a brown, longitudinally fissured bark.

Actions and Pharmacology

Compounds

Tannins (20 to 45%): gallotannins, including terchebulin, terflavin A, punicalagin, corilagin, chebulic acid, and chebu-linic acid

Monosaccharides/oligosaccharides (9%): including D-glucose, D-fructose, saccharose

Fruit acids: including quinic acid (1.5%), shikimic acid (2%)

Fatty oil (in the seeds, to 40%)

Effects

Its high tannin content make clears the use of the treatment as an astringent. A variety of experiments have showd antibacterial, cardiotonic and antiarteriosclerotic (lowering of cholesterol levels) effects for the treatment.

Indications and Usage

Chinese treatment

Tropical Almond is used for chronic diarrhea, chronic dysentery, rectal prolapse, loss of voice because of chronic coughs, blood in the stool, leucorrhea, night sweats and undesired discharges.

Indian treatment

The almond is used in the treatment of wounds, ulcers, gingivitis, excitation, gastric complaints, anorexia, worm infestation, flatulence, hemorrhoids, jaundice, for liver and spleen disease, pharyngodynia, hiccups, coughs, epilepsy, eye disease, skin changes, leprosy, intermittent fever, cardiac dysfunction, gastritis and neuropathy.

Precautions and Adverse Reactions

No health hazardouss are known in conjunction with the proper administration of designated therapeutic dosages, Even though even therapeutic dosages could lead to constipation, due to the high tannin content (administration as an antidiarrheal).

Overdosage

The administration of extremely high doses (25% of the fodder) over a period of 4 weeks to rats led to kidney and liver damage; mice developed liver tumors in a related experiment (750 mg/kg body weight of the tannin fraction over a period of 12 weeks).
